SPAM
That dreaded word. You have email with the thought of
sending important missives to and from your cadre of
friends. But instead you open to find a MESS of
drivel about ink cartridges, penis size, weight loss
and a host of get rich quick schemes. Some are
amusing, others incoherent, some disgusting but all
unwanted.
If you are SICK of spam and use a POP3 mailer (like
Outlook Express, Outlook, Netscape, Eudora NOT
hotmail, yahoo, or AOL) then there is a FREE program
out there to help you. YES FREE! It's SO free that
they even give you the source code for FREE.
It's called POPFile.
What it does is act as a PROXY (or middleman) between
you and your mail server. Instead of YOU checking
your email you ask POPFile to check it and test it if
its spam. It will NOT add any steps when you check
your email you'll use your mail program as you always
have. Just with a few changes to the Account
Settings.
POPFile works not using buckets. Which you have to
train. POPFile doesn't know a message from Aunt
Bertha from a HGH message. So you have to teach it
the difference. It may take a couple days but it's
worth it.
Once you've got it running and checking your email
when it makes a mistake you simply go to a web page
(that's actually running on your machine) and correct
it. As time goes on POPFile will not only remember
your corrections but use what it's flagged as spam to
help it decide if new messages are spam. I've reached
over 98% accuracy in only a few days.
So to install just go to the POPFile
site and download yourself a copy. There is
PLENTY of documentation on installation and
configuration but if you need some help just ask.
